What is the Population Decline Simulator?

This site visualizes historical population trends and future projections for all municipalities in Japan using charts and data.

By simulating how many people will live in your hometown in the future, we aim to make the issue of population decline more tangible.

National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS), Regional Population Projections (2023 ed.)

Census Data (Actual)

Municipal population data from the National Census (Statistics Bureau of Japan) obtained via the e-Stat API. Coverage: 1980–2020.

Population Projections

Regional population projections from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS), 2023 edition. Projection period: 2020–2050 (5-year intervals).

Information on this site is based on official data but is not guaranteed for accuracy or completeness.
Values beyond 2050 are extrapolated and carry particularly high uncertainty.
